My Maritime Journey and Vision
My name is Yuster Vitus Mapunda, and I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Transportation and Nautical Science (BMTNS) at the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute. Throughout my academic journey, I have gained valuable hands-on experience through structured sea-time training aboard various vessels. This practical exposure has played a vital role in bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world maritime operations, enhancing both my technical skills and professional readiness.
My Sea-Time Experience
During my cadetship, I served on the following vessels:
- Tug Chui – Mtwara (2022):
Gained foundational experience in port operations, small vessel handling, and effective team coordination in a high-paced environment. - MV Mbeya II – Mbeya (2023):
Developed skills in domestic maritime transport, passenger and cargo handling, and onboard safety protocols. - MV Butiama – Mwanza (2024):
Strengthened my knowledge in navigation systems, cargo operations, and decision-making under operational pressure.
These experiences have sharpened my technical and operational abilities while instilling discipline, teamwork, and resilience core values necessary for a successful maritime career.
My Vision for the Maritime Profession
The maritime sector holds tremendous potential, especially within the framework of the Blue Economy. With global trade continuing to expand, there is a growing demand for highly skilled and well-trained seafarers. Importantly, the industry offers diverse career paths not just aboard ships but also in logistics, port management, maritime law, marine environmental protection, and more.
I envision a maritime industry that is inclusive, progressive, and sustainable. To achieve this, we must:
- Encourage greater participation of women in maritime professions to foster gender equity and unlock untapped potential.
- Invest in modern maritime education and training to prepare the next generation for evolving industry demands.
