I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine and Mechanical Engineering (BMME) at the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI). From August to October 2024, I had the opportunity to undertake industrial practical training aboard MV VICTORIA as an Engine Trainee. This hands-on experience significantly broadened my understanding of the maritime industry and its practical operations.
As a female seafarer, I recognize the unique advantages I bring to the industry. These include offering fresh perspectives on leadership styles, promoting personal and professional growth, and addressing the global shortage of skilled maritime labour making the inclusion of women more vital than ever.
Nonetheless, the journey is not without its challenges. The maritime field remains traditionally male-dominated, and female seafarers may face isolation and limited representation. However, we continue to embrace the pride of being female mariners and strive to become agents of change in the maritime industry.
Being a WOMESA mentee has also played a pivotal role in my development. WOMESA has supported me emotionally, socially, and professionally, helping to weave female seafarers more deeply into the fabric of the maritime sector. Through the mentorship program, I have had the invaluable opportunity to engage with experienced women in maritime, who have shared their journeys and lessons learned. In addition, WOMESA empowers women through training and education, ensuring we are aware of our rights and potential in the maritime field.
