Testimony of Suzan Mussa – Marine Engine Cadet
My name is Suzan Mussa, a student at Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI), pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Marine Engineering. Currently, I’m gaining practical experience as a sea time student at Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Dar es Salaam.
During my training, I have worked on vessels such as ASD tugs, which has helped me understand real-life marine operations. My passion for engineering and the inspiration I got from successful people in the industry, especially women encouraged me to choose this career path.
The maritime sector is male-dominated, and that fact motivated me to become one of the few women in the field. While men are often seen as the key players, I am driven to push harder and prove that women, too, belong in this industry. I look up to the few female seafarers who have made it to the top they give me strength and hope.
I believe the maritime industry has many opportunities, especially now with the rise of technology and artificial intelligence (AI), which has made operations easier and more efficient than before.
Of course, I have faced challenges along the way, but they have made me stronger and taught me the importance of resilience and perseverance.
Being a WOMESA mentee has also played a big role in my growth. Through WOMESA, I have been able to connect with professional women in the maritime field and attend training seminars that help me build both soft and technical skills. Events like omen in IDWM 2025 have been especially powerful in shaping my career path.
I am proud of how far I’ve come and excited for the journey ahead. My goal is to keep learning, growing, and contributing as a strong female engineer in the maritime industry.
