My name is Sauda Makwaya from Tanzania. I am an active member of WOMESA Tanzania and hold a license as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch on ships of less than 750kW. My journey in the maritime sector began in 2014 when I enrolled at the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering and Technology.
Over the past decade, I’ve gained hands-on experience working aboard various types of vessels including tugboats, pontoons, and passenger ships, serving as both an engine cadet and an engineering officer. From a young age, I dreamed of becoming an engineer. I’ve always had a passion for travel, meeting new people, and building a meaningful career which is why I chose to become a mariner. I’m proud to currently serve as a Junior Engineer with Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD.
Looking ahead, I aspire to become a Marine Surveyor. I am committed to representing both myself and my country on a global stage. One of my greatest ambitions is to serve as a role model for young girls, encouraging them to pursue careers in the maritime sector.
Being a woman at sea comes with its own unique challenges, but I believe that with determination, focus, and hard work, no dream is beyond reach.
