I am Raya Khalfan, a passionate and dedicated maritime professional, currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Shipping and Logistics Management at the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI). With over 12 years of working experience in maritime sectors I have built a career grounded in service, leadership, and continuous learning.
Through the unwavering support and opportunities provided by WOMESA Tanzania, I have achieved some of the most defining milestones in my career. Through WOMESA Tanzania I was able to attend various courses include: Maritime SheEO Leadership Accelerator Programme, Port Senior Management Programme at Galilee International Management Institute (Israel) and blue economy and ocean governance. In recognition of my commitment, I was being selected as the Tanzania Ambassador for Maritime SheEO Leadership and honoured with the Outstanding Junior Member Award by WOMESA Tanzania.
As a woman leader, I am committed to mentorship, empowerment, and sustainability. I have contributed to youth outreach through the “Catch Them Young” initiative, encouraging students especially girls to explore maritime careers. My leadership vision is rooted in visibility, equity, and transformation, focused on strengthening women’s participation, advancing youth engagement, and championing sustainable growth and responsible ocean stewardship across the maritime sector.
Am currently serving as the Secretary of the Zanzibar Women Seafarers Association (ZAWOSA) since 2022 . In this role, I coordinate the association’s initiatives, advocate for women’s empowerment in the maritime and blue economy sectors, and support members through networking and capacity-building efforts. Additionally, I am the Coordinator of the Zanzibar Small-Scale Fishers (ZASFICU) Association, where I work closely with local fishing communities to promote sustainable practices, improve livelihoods, and ensure environmental conservation.
My leadership journey has been enhanced through capacity-building and training provided by WOMESA Tanzania Chapter which has empowered me with essential knowledge and skills in leadership, governance, and advocacy enabling me to serve my community more effectively.
