My name is Miss. Farida Shabani Zowange, a young lady of 26 years old from Tanzania, an active member of WOMESA Tanzania Chapter, a Holder of Ordinary Diploma in Marine Engineering from Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI).
I came to know Maritime Industry from my former classmate and a good friend Anza Amen Uliki. I never thought that one day it will be my career. As to my undertaking at that time the industry was for male only. She inspired me and made me undertake studies for three years from 2012 to 2015 so that I can be part of those females who are challenging the male dominations in the industry.
After finishing my studies I got sea time at several vessels such as tug boat at Tanzania Ports Authority as an engineer cadet which enable me to attain officer in charge of engineering watch certificate.
From the beginning when I decided to join this industry I encountered a lot of discouragements from friends and distance relatives who doubted my decision, but my parents supported me all the way which has help me to be where I am today.
Sometimes if I look back, I find it very encouraging for women to work on-board a ship and am very proudly of myself being among the few ladies who have managed to achieve their dreams as sailors. However, I am still dreaming to work on large vessels across the world such as cruisers, containers or tankers.
Currently am pursuing Masters degree in Marine Engineering Management at Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute.
