I am Leonida Michael Nyambune, a passionate and ambitious student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Marine Engineering at the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI). I began my maritime journey in 2022, shortly after completing my high school education. At the time, I knew very little about the maritime industry but joining DMI opened my eyes to a world of opportunity.
As I immersed myself in my studies, I developed a strong interest in the maritime field. The more I learned, the more I fell in love with the course. That was the beginning of my journey toward becoming a dedicated seafarer.
During my seatime as an engine cadet, I gained valuable hands-on experience aboard several vessels operating in Tanzanian waters. I served on MV.Victoria, a passenger ship, and MV.Umoja, a cargo ship both operated by what is now known as TASHICO (Tanzania Shipping Company). I also trained aboard a tugboat at the Dar es Salaam Port, where I further strengthened my practical skills in marine engineering. These experiences have shaped my career and my ambition to become a skilled and knowledgeable female officer in the maritime industry.
My advice to future seafarers
