I am Neema John Mkilila, currently serving as a motorman at the Tanzania Shipping Company (TASHICO). I joined the company in 2022 following my graduation from the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI), where I earned an Ordinary Diploma in Marine Engineering in 2017.
During my studies, I had the opportunity to complete practical training with several companies, including Mkombozi Fishing and Marine Transport and the Tanzania Shipping Company (TASHICO). These hands-on experiences equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge of ship operations.
Some of the key achievements I have accomplished in my professional journey. I secured permanent employment, which has provided me with job stability and opportunities for long-term career development. I have also gained substantial skills in my field, allowing me to carry out my duties effectively and confidently. One of my notable milestones was receiving a promotion that enabled me to travel by ship both within Tanzania and to international destinations such as Uganda and Kenya, which greatly enriched my professional experience. Additionally, I have successfully increased my income, empowering me to better manage the cost of living and improve my overall quality of life.
I encourage young women to actively pursue careers in the maritime profession. Increasing the number of female professionals in this field is a key step toward achieving gender equity, while also enriching the industry with diverse perspectives and strengthening ship operations and maritime leadership.
